Even though the dunes are a protected area, that does not mean that you are not allowed to wander about in them. There is, however, an area in the dunes that is forbidden to enter. The area is known as La Charca, and it is the remains of a seawater lagoon with reeds around the eastern edge. This reedy area is home to nesting waterfowl. You can actually view the front part of La Charca as you walk along the beach boardwalk. From this edge, it just looks like a beach pond. The back portion of this area is where the reeds are and where the waterfowl nest. If you like nature, you can get some good views as you walk along the boardwalk.
