Where is Gran Canaria?

Gran Canaria is an island of the Canary Islands. Loosely translated it means Grand Canary, and on some maps that is what it is called. It is located in the Atlantic Ocean about 90 miles off the northwestern coast of Africa, and about 850 miles from Europe. When you are taking Gran Canaria holidays, you are vacationing in Spain, even though you are  much closer to Africa than you are to Spain.

Gran Canaria is the most populated island of the Canary Islands after Tenerife. It is the third extension in the Canary Islands. Some reports suggest that Gran Canaria was formerly named el Rondo, due to its circular shape. Gran Canaria is located southeast of Tenerife and west Fuerteventura.

Details about Gran Canaria

The island is of volcanic origin, mostly made of fissure vents. The diameter of the island is approximately 30 miles, which is really quite small and that means you can get to most destinations easily on any given day.

The population of the island is approximately 820,000, with almost 400,000 of those living in the capital city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The western and northwestern parts of the island have the fewest tourists, and also the best highways.  The Gran Canaria International Airport is the only airport on Gan Canaria. It is one of the busiest airports in Spain.

Gran Canaria's average daytime highs range from 68°  to 78°  in the summer.  Although there are some cool nights in the winter, lows below 50° are unknown near the coast.  Inland, the climate is still mild but the mountain areas will see occasional frost or snow. Annual rainfall averages 8 inches, with most of this falling in the cooler months and July, August, and September being normally rainless.

The rainfall is not distributed evenly through the island, some areas are much drier than others. Cloud covered sunshine is often the norm during the cooler months, and there can be several cloudy days at times in the winter. Summers are generally quite sunny however, with the south of the island being most favored.

The island is called a miniature continent, because of the different climates found on the island. It has long golden beaches and endless dunes of white sand, green valleys and picturesque villages.

A third of the island is under protection as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO.  The island possesses 32 natural protected spaces, with the more well-known ones being the rural park of Nublo, Doramas Jungle, the ravine of Azuaje, Tamadaba, and Pino Santo.

Tourism on Gran Canaria

Most of the annual 2.2 million tourists every year visit the southern part of the island because the north is generally cooler and the South is warmer and sunny. The east coast of the island is flat, dotted with beaches and the western coast is rockier and mountainous.  Most of the tourist traffic is in the south of the island, which is sunnier and has less rain than north and this is where most people end up when taking Gran Canaria holidays.

Just below the airport in the town of Vecindario is a large shopping center called Commercial Atlantico with a large mall. In the South is a large bird park, as well as many beach resorts.

Some of the better-known resort communities include the towns of San Augustin, Playa Del Inglis, Sonnenland, and Maspalomas.  When planning your Gran Canaria holidays you will want to consider if you want to avoid or embrace the tourist areas.  With Gran Canaria being so small in area, it may be the place where you can get accommodations in a quiet area and still be able to enjoy the tourist areas.

On the southern shore, in the municipality of Mogan is Puerto Mogan, a picturesque village referred to as Little Venice because of its many canals.

When it comes to Tenerife, you will find a variety of climate changes across the island, with winter temperatures of around 15C to 20C in the winter in the North and 20C to 25C in the South. I have been learning a lot about Gran Canaria since I started this site in July.  I have been doing research on the internet as well as in my local public library.  With the prevalent use of the internet these days, a lot of people have forgotten about what a great source the public library can be.  I live in a really small town, so we don't actually have our own library, I have to go to the next biggest town over and use theirs.  And it is not all that large, but we do have access to a bookmobile. 

Anyway, I am a self proclaimed travel junkie, so if it has to do with travel, I am interested.  I like to learn about new places, but more than that I like to travel to them!  The Canary Islands is somewhere I have always thought of as an exotic location that I would like to visit.  I knew it was in Spain and I had visions of tropical rain forests.  Well, if you have ever been to Gran Canaria or any of the other Canary Islands, you know my vision was not exactly accurate!  Gran Canaria is dubbed "the little continent", and while there is some rainforest area on Gran Canaria, the whole island is by no means a rainforest.  As a matter of fact, the area in the south is desert, with the splendid Dunes of Maspalomas.

So, the more I know, the more I want to know.  One of the really great sites I have found on the web to help me learn about Gran Canaria is Canary Forums, a place where if you have questions, you can post and members of the forum will answer you. A lot of people that are regular members on there are residents of Gran Canaria, so they have lots of good information.

I'll be back with more information that I learn about things of interest to me, but if you have a topic you would like to know more about, leave me a comment and I will do some research and come up with an answer for you.

The Hotel Casario Playa del Ingles

gets some really good reviews.  It is in a area of town that is close enough to walk to the center of things or to the beach with less than a 10 minute walk.  The nice thing about this is that you do not have all of the noise and congestion that comes with being in the heart of things.

The staff at the Hotel Casario Playa del Ingles seems to be what sets them apart from other hotels and keeps people coming back to this mid range priced hotel.  They are warm and friendly and go the extra mile to help ensure that your Gran Canaria holidays is a memorable and enjoyable experience.  This is a deliberate action on their part, as part of the company philosophy is the old fashioned art of customer service and customer loyalty.

If you are interested in going half board or full board here you will be interested in the reviews of the food.  Apparently there is not a lot to rave about as far as the food goes, but on the other hand, the food does seem to be edible.  Which actually does say a lot, because I have seen a lot of reviews of hotel food when it is included in the price of the hotel that states they should have just left it in the kitchen.  No such complaints at this place though, most say they were always able to find something to eat out of the buffet that satisfied them.  Hotel Casario Playa del Ingles only does breakfast so you will not be able to get full board accommodations here.

There are mixed reviews on the Ifa Dunamar Playa del Ingles, but hey, isn't that the case of all hotel reviews?

One thing that everyone of the reviews I read agreed upon was the fabulous location, only 20m away, or just across the street.  The reviews of the beach itself were nice too, all agreeing that it is a super beach.  So if location is what you are after, this is the place for you.

A lot of people when writing the reviews about the Ifa Dunamar Playa del Ingles, agreed that this was some of the best food they have ever had when staying at a half border war with full board the hotel. There were a couple of dissenters, but for the most part people rave about the food here.

This hotel apparently caters a lot to the German clientele, and it seems to be popular also with the older crowd of Germans. That is not to say that young people, families, or people of other races would not be welcome here. Apparently, everyone is welcome, it just seems to be a favored location of over 50 Germans.

One ongoing complaint that I read about this hotel that seem to be in almost every review was the fact that some loungers were allowed to be reserved for an entire week. So somebody could reserve a prime some lounger next to the pool, and if they were at the beach all day, you still could not use the lounger because it was reserved. I have to agree this sounds like a really dumb way to do things. Why should it be reserved "just in case" someone wants to use?

The reviews of the pool were buried, some saying that it was perfectly lovely and adequate and others saying that they were small and crowded. But there are three pools on-site, and I just can't see how you could not find a pool to suit you. With three to choose from. And to look at the pictures, the pools look pretty nice.

In addition to being only across the street from the beach, the Ifa Dunamar Playa del Ingles also is in a prime location as far as shopping, restaurants, and public transportation goes. If you feel like going out for the evening and hitting the bars or nightclubs, which a lot of people come to Gran Canaria for, is just a short walk away.

Hotel Playa del Ingles This is a family oriented 3 star hotel with around 200 rooms.  It was built in 1971, but was renovated in 2004.  It is well located just steps from the beach and the surrounding area has plenty of shops. On site is a bar as well as a buffet style restaurant.  The hotel has two swimming pools, as well as a playground and other facilities for the kids. At this hotel you will also find onsite parking, internet service and an in room safe.

The Hotel Playa del Ingles is a reasonably price hotel that for a one bedroom option will run you about $85 a night for the bed and breakfast option, $95 a night for half board accommodations and around $120 a night for full board. For those of you not from Europe, what that means is the different amounts of food that the hotel will serve you for the included price.

The difference is as follows: Bed and breakfast means you have your room and they will feed you breakfast at the hotel for no extra charge. Half board means they will feed you breakfast and dinner and lunch is on your own. Full board means breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Drinks are not included with these rates, for that you would have to choose the all inclusive option if they have it.

The Hotel Playa del Ingles does not have the all inclusive option and the breakfast and dinner options are buffets.  I think half board would be the way to go.  You can fill up on breakfast, go out and about during the day and pick up lunch somewhere and then have dinner back at the hotel while you are getting ready for your evenings out.

The Hotel Playa del Ingles has all of the amenities you could want at a hotel.  In addition to comfortable rooms, they are located just 200m away from the beach.  Again, for those of you not from Europe, that is a little over 1/10 of a mile, or somewhere around a block or two.  They also have a fresh water swimming pool, snack bar, sun loungers, parasols and a solarium. You can go for a game of table tennis, billiards, darts or boccia.   There is a daily entertainment entertainment programme for children and adults as well as a miniclub, playground and splash pool for kids.

Close by the Hotel Playa del Ingles is the center of town where you can find lots of shopping options, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs.  There is also transportation links very close by, in case you want to visit other parts of the island of Gran Canaria while you are on holidays, or vacations as they are called by some.

Green Park Apartments Playa del Ingles are a favorite place for the budget minded. Renting an apartment can help you achieve the goal of taking cheap holidays in Playa del Ingles. The rooms are basic, but they do come with a small kitchenette, which can help save on food costs. Younger people seem to like this hotel more than the older crowd does, partly due to budgets, but mostly due to the fact that this is a party hotel. 

If you are looking for a quiet family hotel, this is not the place for you!  I urge you to look for another budget hotel!

The reviews that I have read of the Green Park Apartments include statements such as "doors slamming at 3:00 am" and "people running from room to room at all hours of the night".  If you have a family or if you are not a party animal, or are not a very deep sleeper, this is not the atmosphere you want to spend your vacation in. IF however, you like to party all night long and want or need the same type of people around you, this may end up being your very favorite vacation spot in the whole world!

The Green Park Apartments are near the Yumbo Center, which is an area of town where you can find lots of shopping and bars all gathered into one compact area.  The Yumbo Center is considered the gay center on Gran Canaria.  You will find lots of gay bars in this section of town, and it is the place where gays gather to party.  But do not let that stop you from visiting this section of town!  Gays are not the ONLY ones to party here, just the most prevalent!

You will find bars in this section of town that will have drag queen shows at night, and they have a great time.  Lots of drag queen costumes.  This is a very lively section of town and a not to be missed.  The bars stay open late, usually till 3:00 or 4:00 am, with after hours bars staying open until 7:00 am.  No need to rush back to your lonely room, whether you are staying at the Green Park Apartments or elsewhere, and close yourself in by the midnight hour, go ahead and stay out all night long and join the other revelers!

Drink prices in the bars near the Green Park Apartments will run the gamut from cheap to expensive.  Do the same thing here as you would at home or anywhere else.  Check out the bar when you walk in and see if the atmosphere is a place you want to hang out in.  And when you order your first drink, make sure you know what you are being charged.  There is no harm in asking up front what the prices will be.  If you do not like the prices, move on!  There are plenty of places to go, no sense in patronizing a place you don't like since there are so many choices!

Green Park Apartments are very close to the beach, as well as being in a neighborhood where there are not only restaurants and shops, but more importantly, bars. The management here does not seem too concerned with parties that are loud and last till 3 or 4 in the morning, however, some people do still manage to get themselves kicked out! Wetter Gran Canaria

I have to laugh at myself over the term "wetter Gran Canaria."  While I was doing research for this page, I kept running across this term.  Since I have vacationed a few times in Hawaii, where they have a "wet" side of the island and a "dry" side, I just assumed that is what this term was referring to.

But the more research I did on the weather in Gran Canaria, the more I came to realize that the Canary Islands are not like Hawaii in that respect.  So of course I did what any self respecting web master would do………..I googled it!

To my utter surprise, I discovered that, basically, (and pardon me if I am offending any one that actually speaks German) it is the German way of saying weather!  It made perfect sense to me once I knew, but I had a heck of a time trying to discover where the "wetter Gran Canaria" was.

Weather Forecast Gran Canaria

As you probably have figured out by now, the weather forecast for Gran Canaria, whether you are talking about Puerto Rico weather, the weather in Maspalomas, or the weather of Las Palomas Gran Canaria, all will most likely be warm and sunny. As a matter of fact, you could probably say the same thing for the weather in Lanzarote and the Tenerife weather! There may be some slight variations, but basically you can count on warm temperatures in Gran Canaria.

The exception to this will be if you head into the interior of Gran Canaria. Since the island of Gran Canaria, also known as "the little continent", has so many microclimates, the interior is where you will most certainly find the variations. The weather in Gran Canaria in teh mountainous regions can get frost and even snow in the winter months, but this will not affect your holiday weather if you are sunning yourself on the beach. But how cool would it be to lie on the beach and gaze at a snow covered mountain in the background?
